Abstract
A conventional activated sludge plant designed for BOD and TSS removal only was required to meet a new effluent ammonia limit. The plant was operated to nitrify but suffered from floating sludge due to denitrification in the secondary sludge blanket. A conversion to the Modified Ludzack Ettinger (MLE) mode of operation, constructed by the plant staff resulted in a low cost solution to prevent floating sludge.
