Improving Wastewater Collection and Customer Service with a Computerized Work and Asset Management System
Abstract
Management of Corpus Christi's Wastewater Collection system is improving customer service and the underlying collection system infrastructure by using a computerized work and asset management system (WAMS) linked to the City's Geographical Information System. The system provides a computerized record of all customer calls for service and a history of all collection system work performed identifying the location of the work including system attributes such as line depth, pipe type, or pipe size. It is far more than merely a computerized maintenance system stand-alone work order system. Our collection system went live with the WAMS in October 2002. It is a key tool of the Department's on-going reengineering/continuous improvement effort, and is enabling continual measurement and evaluation of actual customer service levels, to develop strategies to improve the collection system infrastructure, and to improve the cost-efficiency of departmental operations. The computerized system used in Wastewater Collection was adopted as the City standard for work and asset management systems. Other City operations using the same system include Water Treatment, Water Distribution, Wastewater Treatment, Stormwater, Gas, Streets, Solid Waste, Parks, and Facility Maintenance.
