THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES CUSTOMIZED SEWER DESIGN TOOL AND STREAMLINED DESIGN FOR SEWER RENEWAL PROJECTS
Abstract
The City of Los Angeles (the City) operates and maintains more than 6,500 miles of sewers. To comply with Collection System Settlement Agreement, the City is required to rehabilitate an average of 60 miles of sewer a year from FY07/08 to FY13/14. An innovative sewer research/design tool based on GIS technology has been developed by the City to facilitate the sewer rehabilitation efforts. In addition, a streamlined design process was also established and written into the design guidelines. The new design tool and the streamlined design approach have increased the productivity. This paper describes the features of the customized design tool and the streamlined design approach. The lessons learned during the development are documented for other agencies that may be undertaking similar sewer renewal programs or that may be looking for a more efficient sewer design tool.
