Knowledge is Power: Options for Improving Mercury TMDLS
Abstract
TMDLs need to be directionally correct before they can be applied as useful tools for water quality restoration. Many mercury TMDLs rely on simplified assumptions that are not consistent with real world data. They also ignore confounding factors that may have a more significant influence on methyl mercury levels in fish than mercury loading to water. A significant number of mercury TMDLs remain to be developed. Those TMDLs should benefit from our emerging knowledge about mercury cycling in the water environment.
