Thunder Bay WPCP: Two Years of Operating Data from North America's Largest Two-Stage BAF Plant
Abstract
The biological aerated filtration (BAF) installation at the Thunder Bay Atlantic Avenue Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP) is the first municipal installation of its kind in Ontario/Canada and one of the largest operating BAF installations in North America.The two stage BAF system was started up in the fall of 2005. The following paper gives a brief introduction to BAF technology and the specific features of the installation. Further sections illustrate effluent characteristics, plant performance and further operational results since start up. BAF - specific observations regarding filter headloss, support media and impact on operating costs are presented in separate sections
