York-Peel Sanitary Diversion System Odour Control Facility
Abstract
Many municipalities in Canada and around the world experience odour control problems in their wastewater collection systems, due to the decomposition of sewage in septic environments, and efforts are being made to mitigate odour levels in such systems as well as to reduce the corrosive effects of these gases. Passive or active control methods are typically used to effectively reduce/eliminate odour generated from the wastewater without affecting the structural integrity of the sewer pipe. The Regional Municipality of York is discharging a portion of its wastewater to the Region of Peel's South Peel Wastewater System (Peel System) for final treatment through a long forcemain. Due to the lengthy travel time in the forcemain and deprivation of oxygen, the sewage goes anaerobic. In order to reduce odour and corrosion levels in this effluent before it is discharged into the Peel System, an Odour Control Facility was constructed where the forcemain discharges into Peel's gravity system.Prior to design, an odour control study was carried out to predict generation of odorous compounds along the new York-Peel forcemain and to estimate the potential impact at the discharge point into the Peel System. Potential mitigation measures/odour control technologies were investigated to determine the design for York Region and satisfy the requirements of Peel Region. The new odour control system for the York-Peel Sanitary Sewer Diversion System is sized based on the projected wastewater flows for the next 30 years. The study results provided the basis for the establishment of the process treatment requirements and the development of a unique Odour Control Facility incorporating a packed tower chemical scrubber to treat hydrogen sulfide and mercaptans generated in the forcemain; as well as a ferrous chloride injection system into the gravity sewer system downstream of the facility, to reduce downstream odour generation in the Peel System.Earth Tech Canada completed studies which included field sampling to gather data to validate and interpret the material and treatment technology needed to reduce the level of odour generated by this Sanitary Sewer Diversion system. Air dispersion modeling and diagrams were produced to visually depict the technologies for treatment of the odour from the time it entered the Odour Control Facility to when it was discharged into the Peel System. Earth Tech's facility design includes a packed chemical scrubber to treat key odourous and corrosive compounds including hydrogen sulphide and mercaptans in the forcemain, as well as having a ferrous chloride injection system to reduce downstream odour generation. The York-Peel Odour Control Facility was completed on August 5, 2006 and is fully automated with no direct operator control required. The equipment and software allow the facility staff to operate and view the system's process data through the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system at Peel's Clarkson Water Pollution Control Plant about 40km away. This paper will discuss the design, performance and installation costs of the odour control facility for York-Peel Sanitary Diversion System as well as some unique design features of the odour control facility.
