Remote Implementation of a Utility Asset Management System: Internalizing Implementation and Configuration Costs to Obtain System Ownership and Reallocating Implementation Funding
Abstract
Canton Township is a suburban community of the Detroit metropolitan area located in Wayne County, Michigan. Over the past two decades, it has been one of the fastest growing communities in the State, and in some years issued over 1000 new certificates of occupancy. With these impressive growth rates, additional infrastructure was required to accommodate the increased demand in water and sewer service, and storm drainage control. To manage the increase in the assets for these systems more efficiently, Canton Township implemented Cityworks®, a GIS-centric Asset Management System (AMS), sometimes referred to as a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS). This paper outlines the Remote Implementation (RI) method used by Canton Township, while identifying its benefits and drawbacks, versus a more Traditional Implementation (TI) approach. This paper may help other organizations who are considering implementing and asset management system determine whether RI or TI is right method for them.
