EPA Water Security Division: Promoting an All-Hazards Approach to Security
Abstract
Within the federal government, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is the sector-specific agency responsible for the infrastructure protection activities of the nation's wastewater and drinking water systems. The mission for this infrastructure protection activity falls to the Water Security Division (WSD) within EPA's Office of Water. WSD provides national leadership in developing and promoting security programs that enhance the wastewater and drinking water sector's ability to prevent, detect, respond to, and recover from potential terrorist attacks, natural disasters, and all other incidents – all hazards – that may cause harm to wastewater and drinking water consumers and water utility infrastructure.Through collaborative efforts with utilities and other water sector organizations, WSD is taking a leadership role in the development of tools, resources, and information that are helping the water sector to enhance security in a cost-effective manner.
