Niagara Falls Ontario High Rate Treatment Project
Abstract
The Niagara Falls Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is owned and operated by the Regional Municipality of Niagara, in Ontario, Canada. The 136 MLD (36.0 MGD) capacity plant, experiences significant increases in flows during wet weather, and during larger events, excess flows are discharged into local receiving waters without treatment. The Northeast Area Wastewater Servicing Study, completed by the Region in 2008, identified high rate treatment (HRT) at the Niagara Falls WWTP as the preferred solution for controlling the excess wet weather flow, and the Region applied for and received matching Infrastructure Stimulus Funds from the Ontario provincial and Canadian federal governments to implement the project by the end of March 2011. This poster presentation discusses the various HRT alternatives considered, and the selection and design of the ultimately selected solution, a new Chemically Enhanced Primary Treatment CEPT system at the Niagara Falls WWTP.
