Evaluation of Alternatives to Domestic Ion Exchange Water Softeners
Abstract
The effectiveness of four no-salt water conditioning devices to reduce scale in a domestic water heater was tested. The devices were tested using three different water qualities found in the southwest United States. The testing protocol was based on the German protocol DVGW-W512 in which 700 gallons of water were periodically pumped through the testing device and into a simulated domestic water heater heated to 80 or 60°C over 21 days. The scale formed was measured and compared to the scale formed with no treatment. All four devices were successful in reducing the amount of scale formed by varying degrees.
