The City of Las Vegas Partners with the Community and Pioneers Co-digestion in the Las Vegas Valley for Renewable Energy Generation
Abstract
The City of Las Vegas Water Pollution Control Facility has a long history of renewable energy generation. Recently, the WPCF completed a Biogas Augmentation Pilot program that resulted in the achievement of several milestone goals including site-specific information regarding enhanced gas production, digestion performance, and materials handling for a future full-scale organic waste processing facility. In addition, the partnerships developed with the local community continue to grow with discussions now focused on delivering the surplus gas to local utilities. This paper will focus on the lessons learned through the design, start-up and operation of the co-digestion pilot facility at the City of Las Vegas WPCF, and will highlight the history of biogas production and the focus on renewable energy into the future.
