Upgrading WWTPs for energy self-sufficiency and full recycling

Abstract

This study shows how to upgrade conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) with different innovations to produce useful resources, such as automotive biofuel, biofertilizers and water for reuse. To reduce energy consumption and eliminate the carbon footprint of WWTPs, its efficiency is optimized by the integration of different solutions in each of water, gas and sludge lines. The demonstration of six different innovative technologies on full scale reduces the electric consumption of the WWTP in Almería (Spain) and minimizes its environmental impact and carbon footprint. The overall Life Cycle Analysis and final impacts of energy and carbon footprint reduction as well as nutrient recovery are determined in order to scale-up, replicate and transfer these technologies to full-scale conventional WWTPs which could be potentially up-graded.
