City of Bonita Springs Flood Remediation

Abstract

A neighborhood in the City of Bonita Springs, Florida, has experienced recurring flooding and was recently impacted by Hurricane Irma in 2017. American Structurepoint, Inc. (ASI) created a detailed one- and two-dimensional hydrologic and hydraulic model representing existing conditions in the neighborhood. Existing flooding impacts for a range of storm events from the 1- to the 100-year event were analyzed, including number of flooded structures, length of flooded roadways, and total flooded area. Results from the existing condition model were also utilized to develop a risk assessment map to communicate flooding risks to the community at an individualized property level. Existing flooding impacts and structure risks were utilized to develop design alternatives for stormwater infrastructure. Design alternative modeling results demonstrated up to a 32% reduction in total flooded area and 40% reduction in flooding depth during the 5-year storm event.
